Safe fireplace Burning Tips Portland, OregonAs we are getting closer to fireplace season, we at American Chimney & Masonry in Portland would like to talk about safe burning tips that prevent fire hazards. Whenever you use your fireplace, there is a potential for danger, especially if you do not follow safety habits. Since our top priority is fireplace and chimney safety, we feel it is important to educate our customers on the best ways to burn wood. We would like to share with you some wood-burning safety tips from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA).

Schedule an annual professional chimney sweeping and inspection.

Before you light the first fire of the season, call us at American Chimney & Masonry to have one of our CSIA-certified chimney sweeps clean and inspect your chimney. This yearly maintenance task is crucial to reduce the risk of fires and carbon monoxide leaks which can be caused by creosote deposits and flue blockages.

Only burn seasoned wood.

To enjoy clean-burning and long-lasting fires, use firewood that has been seasoned, or dried, for at least six months. Keep your supply of seasoned firewood covered and stored off of the ground to keep it dry. You should also never burn treated wood or your Christmas tree in your fireplace.

Keep the area around your fireplace clear.

To avoid an accidental fire, do not place combustible items like furniture and curtains near the hearth. A good rule of thumb to follow is to keep combustibles at least 36 inches away from the fireplace.

Place a fireplace screen in front of the hearth.

If you do not have glass fireplace doors, you can put a metal screen in front of the fireplace opening to protect your flooring or carpet from becoming ignited by flying sparks and embers.

Never leave a burning fire unattended.

You should ensure the fire is completely out before going to bed or leaving your home. You should also be sure to keep an eye on children and pets while a fire is burning in the fireplace.

Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

These smoke alarms should be installed throughout your home for essential safety reasons. Be sure to check the batteries every spring and fall when you reset your clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

By following these safe burning tips, you will be able to safely enjoy sitting by the fire this winter. Contact us at American Chimney & Masonry for more wood-burning safety information.
