When you have a masonry chimney, it is important to look out for signs of water penetration. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), water leaks can cause your chimney to be a potential safety hazard. Some of the signs of water penetration damage that need a professional chimney company to repair are flue blockages and loose masonry materials. This type of water damage presents a threat to residents, and regular chimney maintenance is necessary in preventing this damage and deterioration. Of course, there are some clear signs of chimney damage from water leaks, and American Chimney & Masonry would like to tell you more about the damage that requires a professional chimney company to ensure your safety.
Deteriorated Mortar Joints
If you notice any gaps or missing mortar on the exterior of your chimney, you are looking at deteriorated mortar joints that could cause the structure of your chimney to collapse if left unrepaired. This type of water penetration damage allows even more water to leak into your chimney because when mortar deteriorates from water exposure, it becomes even more absorbent. American Chimney & Masonry can repair deteriorated mortar joints with the chimney repointing process. We will cut out the existing mortar to an appropriate depth and then repack the joint with new mortar. This joint will then be cut to form a concave surface to direct water out of the joint.
Stained Ceilings and Walls
If you see water stains on the ceiling and walls of the room where your fireplace is located, it could be caused from water leaking into your chimney. Peeling wallpaper is also a sign of water penetration of a chimney. American Chimney & Masonry in Portland can check to see if you have damage to your chimney cap or flashing system that could be allowing water to easily enter your chimney. This could also be a sign of excessive condensation in your chimney, especially if you have a gas-operated heating appliance. If this is the case, we can install a new stainless steel chimney liner to solve the problem.
Damaged Chimney Crown
Since the chimney crown sits at the very top of your chimney, you will have to be on your roof to be able to easily notice any cracks or damage. At American Chimney & Masonry, we have seen poorly made chimney crowns that do not provide a sufficient overhanging drip edge to direct water away from the crown and the chimney. If water is allowed to pool on top of the crown, it can deteriorate the mortar of the crown and cause it to crack. A cracked and damaged chimney crown can lead to further water penetration of the interior of your chimney. We routinely repair damaged chimney crowns and can even construct new ones if the crowns are beyond repair.
