Is the company licensed and insured?

In Oregon, you can check the Oregon Construction Contractor’s Board website, in Washington you’ll want to go to the Department of Labor and Industries. Both have easy to use search functions where you can confirm that the company has the required insurance (both liability coverage and workers compensation) which protects workers and homeowners in the case of damage to property or injury of a worker. If a quote seems quite low, there is usually a reason. A contractor should also carry a bond to protect homeowners in the event that a contractor does not pay for supplies or materials used for project on your home. 

Is the company Accredited by the Better Business Bureau?

Anyone can say that they are, but again, it is best to verify this directly on the BBB website.

Are technicians certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America?  

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) sets the standard for chimney and venting education in the United States. CSIA certification requires professionals to demonstrate a thorough understanding of chimney construction, fire safety, inspection procedures, and industry standards through comprehensive testing and ongoing education. Again, verify certification credentials of the technician servicing you fireplace and/or chimney on the CSIA website: csia.org.

Are installers certified by the National Fireplace Institute?

NFI certification demonstrates advanced knowledge of safety standards, fuel systems, venting requirements, and proper installation practices through rigorous testing and ongoing education.

Is the company a member of the National Chimney Sweep Guild?

Through industry resources, training opportunities, and a clear code of ethical business practices, the NCSG helps chimney professionals stay informed on evolving standards and best practices.

Does the company have a local physical address? ‍

Companies are popping up that have no local establishment, but a merely a phone room, often in a foreign country that are getting leads and sending individuals out to perform work that they are often unqualified to do. 

And finally, does the company have an exceptional customer experience? ‍
